Originally published in 1991 as part of a short-lived revival of the Classics Illustrated line, this adaptation of Sinclair’s muckraking socialist novel succeeds because of its powerful images. When Kuper initially drew it, he was already a well-known left-wing comics artist. His unenviable task is condensing a 400-page novel into a mere 48 pages, and, inevitably, much of the narrative drama is lost. Kuper replaces it, however, with unmatched pictorial drama. The story follows Lithuanian immigrant Jurgis Rudkis and his family as they are eaten up and spit out by capitalism (represented by Chicago’s packing houses). Kuper uses an innovative full-color stencil technique with the immediacy of graffiti to give Sinclair’s story new life. When Jurgis is jailed for beating the rich rapist Connor, a series of panels suffused with a dull, red glow draw readers closer and closer to Jurgis’s face, until they see that the glint in his eye is fire. Jurgis, briefly prosperous as a strong-arm man for the Democratic machine, smokes a cigar; the smoke forms an image of his dead son and evicted family. Perhaps most visually dazzling is the cubist riot as strikers battle police amid escaping cattle. Kuper infuses this 1906 novel with the energy of 1980s-era street art and with his own profoundly original graphic innovation, making it a classic in its own right.

Upton Sinclair’s "The Jungle" is one of the handful of books throughout all of history, perhaps, that have encapsulated the crying voices of the oppressed. While many readers and politicians at the time of its publication (and since) have focused on the intolerable conditions in which American food products were produced, the major thrust in "The Jungle" is not in regards to the ill-treatment of our food; it is in regards to the ill-treatment of our workers.

The repeated sufferings of Jurgis and his family are akin to an overwhelming symphony of sorrowful songs. As his family is driven deeper into debt, his body worn down, and his life’s zeal and love slowly strangled, Jurgis’ desperation becomes palpable, and if you can’t sympathize with his feelings at the loss of his family’s home–a structure they worked so hard for–check your pulse. You might be dead.

The book contains some of the most horrific depictions in all of literature, including a mercifully oblique reference to a child’s death by being eaten alive by rats. Although the novel focuses on Jurgis primarily, it is the children–the laboring little people–who elicit the most sympathy in this reader’s view. Struggling to support their family, escaping extremely dangerous situations (one little girl is nearly dragged into an alley and raped), sleeping on the street, and begging desperately for food–the appalling conditions being visited upon children as described in "The Jungle" still have the power to arouse strong anger and outrage, over a century after its initial publication.

For a course I’m taking I was required to read "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doer. But let’s be honest. I procrastinated to a point that there was NO way I could finish the book by the time my class was going to start and I desperately needed an alternative. I began searching for overviews and reviews online- and then I found this book. It looked to be a pretty thorough review and I was sure it was what I needed.

The book was SO thorough! It’s exactly what I needed and I cannot even begin to explain to you how happy I was I found this review. The book takes you through the important moments in each chapter- which was exactly what I needed for my class. By the end of this book I felt as though I had a thorough grasp on everything that had happened in ‘All the Light We Cannot See’, including major (and many minor) events throughout the story.

The book allows you to break-down each of the characters and truly understand what role they played in the story. The book captured all of the information I needed to sound well-informed on the book during my class, and I knew exactly what everyone was talking about while discussing the story (even though, unfortunately, I hadn’t read it myself).

I could see this book being a huge with many book clubs, and I’ve used similar Summary and Analysis style books in the past with my book clubs. This one was very well written and had a lot of thought provoking pieces that I think people who actually did read ‘All the Light We Cannot See’ would enjoy discussing and debating. If you’re looking for a book that can help you delve even deeper into the story, I’m sure this book would be ideal for that as well.

Well, actually, Detective Jane Rizzoli goes out of Boston and into Africa to help solve the Boston homicide of avid hunter, Leon Gott in book 11 of this popular series. It appears Gott’s son disappeared in Botswanna several years ago, and the quest to find a link between the tragedies of both father and son takes the 2 women on an adventure to sub-Saharan Africa. Tess Gerritsen does an amazing job of describing the deep and dark African jungle, notably, as a formidable habitat for some of its most dangerous predators (both human and feline). I love to learn, and when an author of my favorite fiction genre is able to both educate and entertain, that it is a win-win.

With most of the previous Rizzoli and Isles novels taking place in Boston, it was great to experience a new and exotic location throughout a good portion of the story. As always, the dialog, interaction, and friendship between the two main characters with polar personalities is pure genius and a lot of fun. And while crime-fighting, dynamic duos are certainly not a new concept in fiction ("Dr. Watson, I presume…"), fortunately, it is one that still works, and Ms. Gerritsen works it well.

Just like all of the books in the Rizolli and Isles series (which has made it to the small screen as a TV series on the TNT cable channel), I definitely had a hard time putting this one down! And no skipped pages, either. I tend to be an impatient reader and do not appreciate when an author spends too much time on unimportant details, such as over self-analysis by characters, including their feelings, philosophy, and minute relationship details with other characters (aka Patricia Cornwell). Tess Gerritsen keeps the story and plot moving at a great pace, and there is no room for boredom.

Just like all of the books in the Rizolli and Isles series (which has made it to the small screen as a TV series on the TNT cable channel), I definitely had a hard time putting this one down! And no skipped pages, either. I tend to be an impatient reader and do not appreciate when an author spends too much time on unimportant details, such as over self-analysis by characters, including their feelings, philosophy, and minute relationship details with other characters (aka Patricia Cornwell). Tess Gerritsen keeps the story and plot moving at a great pace, and there is no room for boredom.

As Clarissa Dalloway walks through London on a fine June morning, a sky-writing plane captures her attention. Crowds stare upwards to decipher the message while the plane turns and loops, leaving off one letter, picking up another. Like the airplane’s swooping path, Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway follows Clarissa and those whose lives brush hers–from Peter Walsh, whom she spurned years ago, to her daughter Elizabeth, the girl’s angry teacher, Doris Kilman, and war-shocked Septimus Warren Smith, who is sinking into madness.

As Mrs. Dalloway prepares for the party she is giving that evening, a series of events intrudes on her composure. Her husband is invited, without her, to lunch with Lady Bruton (who, Clarissa notes anxiously, gives the most amusing luncheons). Meanwhile, Peter Walsh appears, recently from India, to criticize and confide in her. His sudden arrival evokes memories of a distant past, the choices she made then, and her wistful friendship with Sally Seton.

Woolf then explores the relationships between women and men, and between women, as Clarissa muses, “It was something central which permeated; something warm which broke up surfaces and rippled the cold contact of man and woman, or of women together…. Her relation in the old days with Sally Seton. Had not that, after all, been love?” While Clarissa is transported to past afternoons with Sally, and as she sits mending her green dress, Warren Smith catapults desperately into his delusions. Although his troubles form a tangent to Clarissa’s web, they undeniably touch it, and the strands connecting all these characters draw tighter as evening deepens. Although the time covered in this complex novel is only one day, Virginia Woolf, through her genius, manages to cover a lifetime unraveling and exposing the mysteries of the human personality.
The central character of the novel is the delicate Clarissa Dalloway, a disciplined English gentlewoman who provides the perfect contrast to another of the book’s characters, Septimus Warren Smith, an ex-soldier whose world is disintegrating into chaos. Although Clarissa and Septimus never meet, it is through the interweaving of each one’s story into a gossamer whole that Woolf works her genius.
The book is set on a June day in 1923, as Clarissa prepares for a party that evening. Unfolding events trigger memories and recollections of her past, and Woolf offers these bits and pieces to the reader who must then construct the psychological and emotional makeup of Clarissa Dalloway in his own mind. We also learn much about Clarissa through the thoughts of other characters, such as her one-time lover, Peter Walsh, her friend, Sally Seton, her husband, Richard and her daughter Elizabeth.
It is Septimus Warren Smith, however, driven to the brink of insanity by the war, an insanity that even his wife’s tender ministrations cannot cure, who acts as Clarissa’s societal antithesis and serves to divide her world into the "then" and the "now."
In this extremely complex and character-driven novel, Woolf offers her readers a challenge. The novel is not separated into chapters; almost all of the action occurs in the thoughts and reminiscences of the characters and the reader must piece together the story from the random bits and pieces of information each character provides.
