Review

Advance praise for Die Again

“With Die Again, Tess Gerritsen proves that she is still at the top of her game. I love this fantastically gripping story and can’t wait for more.”—Karin Slaughter

“Tess Gerritsen always delivers, and this is Gerritsen at her dark, addictive best. What gives Die Again its peculiar charge is the idea, never far from the surface, that we humans are predatory animals like any other. Perhaps we should not be so surprised to find hunters among us.”—William Landay

“Animal instinct turns savage—and man is an animal. A Rizzoli and Isles thriller is a guaranteed great read, but this time out Gerritsen really brings on the scary!”—Sandra Brown

“Tess Gerritsen once again proves her masterful dominance in stories delving into the criminal mind and forensic sciences. Die Again left me breathless as Rizzoli and Isles investigate a horrific murder, one with ties to an unsolved massacre in years past. Here is a story both harrowing and as intellectually sharp as a dagger’s edge. I dare you to try to stop reading this once you’ve started.”—James Rollins

“Harrowing! Seamlessly melding the gritty streets of Boston with the golden plains of Africa, Tess Gerritsen sets up a cunning predator who’s spent years perfecting his game. Now enter Rizzoli and Isles, two of Boston’s best determined to catch one of the world’s worst in a battle of wits where only the strong can survive. This is Tess Gerritsen at her finest!”—Lisa Gardner

Well, actually, Detective Jane Rizzoli goes out of Boston and into Africa to help solve the Boston homicide of avid hunter, Leon Gott in book 11 of this popular series. It appears Gott’s son disappeared in Botswanna several years ago, and the quest to find a link between the tragedies of both father and son takes the 2 women on an adventure to sub-Saharan Africa. Tess Gerritsen does an amazing job of describing the deep and dark African jungle, notably, as a formidable habitat for some of its most dangerous predators (both human and feline). I love to learn, and when an author of my favorite fiction genre is able to both educate and entertain, that it is a win-win.

With most of the previous Rizzoli and Isles novels taking place in Boston, it was great to experience a new and exotic location throughout a good portion of the story. As always, the dialog, interaction, and friendship between the two main characters with polar personalities is pure genius and a lot of fun. And while crime-fighting, dynamic duos are certainly not a new concept in fiction ("Dr. Watson, I presume…"), fortunately, it is one that still works, and Ms. Gerritsen works it well.

Just like all of the books in the Rizolli and Isles series (which has made it to the small screen as a TV series on the TNT cable channel), I definitely had a hard time putting this one down! And no skipped pages, either. I tend to be an impatient reader and do not appreciate when an author spends too much time on unimportant details, such as over self-analysis by characters, including their feelings, philosophy, and minute relationship details with other characters (aka Patricia Cornwell). Tess Gerritsen keeps the story and plot moving at a great pace, and there is no room for boredom.

Mrs. Dalloway (The Classic Collection) MP3 CD – Audiobook, MP3 Audio, Unabridged
Author: Visit ‘s Virginia Woolf Page ID: 1480560138

.com Review

As Clarissa Dalloway walks through London on a fine June morning, a sky-writing plane captures her attention. Crowds stare upwards to decipher the message while the plane turns and loops, leaving off one letter, picking up another. Like the airplane’s swooping path, Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway follows Clarissa and those whose lives brush hers–from Peter Walsh, whom she spurned years ago, to her daughter Elizabeth, the girl’s angry teacher, Doris Kilman, and war-shocked Septimus Warren Smith, who is sinking into madness.

As Mrs. Dalloway prepares for the party she is giving that evening, a series of events intrudes on her composure. Her husband is invited, without her, to lunch with Lady Bruton (who, Clarissa notes anxiously, gives the most amusing luncheons). Meanwhile, Peter Walsh appears, recently from India, to criticize and confide in her. His sudden arrival evokes memories of a distant past, the choices she made then, and her wistful friendship with Sally Seton.

Woolf then explores the relationships between women and men, and between women, as Clarissa muses, “It was something central which permeated; something warm which broke up surfaces and rippled the cold contact of man and woman, or of women together…. Her relation in the old days with Sally Seton. Had not that, after all, been love?” While Clarissa is transported to past afternoons with Sally, and as she sits mending her green dress, Warren Smith catapults desperately into his delusions. Although his troubles form a tangent to Clarissa’s web, they undeniably touch it, and the strands connecting all these characters draw tighter as evening deepens. As she immerses us in each inner life, Virginia Woolf offers exquisite, painful images of the past bleeding into the present, of desire overwhelmed by society’s demands. –Joannie Kervran Stangeland –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

“With its annotated contemporary reviews, newspaper articles, and historical and medical documents, Broadview’s Mrs Dalloway is an ideal student text.” (Maggie Humm, University of East London, editor of The Edinburgh Companion to Virginia Woolf and the Arts)

“Jo-Ann Wallace’s superb edition of Mrs. Dalloway offers students, scholars, and common readers a richly contextualized framework for Woolf’s fourth novel. Brief, clear, and unobtrusive annotations cover geographical, historical, economic, social, and literary allusions. A thorough yet readable introduction covers Woolf’s biography and reputation, her novel’s modernist and experimental features, and its status as a war novel. Excellent appendices capture a wide range of contemporary reactions, locate the novel within Woolf’s fictional and nonfictional canon, and give readers entry into the lived experience of the time through political, medical, educational, and social documents. The select bibliography and brief chronology are also helpful.” (Beth Rigel Daughterty, Otterbein University)

Although the time covered in this complex novel is only one day, Virginia Woolf, through her genius, manages to cover a lifetime unraveling and exposing the mysteries of the human personality.
The central character of the novel is the delicate Clarissa Dalloway, a disciplined English gentlewoman who provides the perfect contrast to another of the book’s characters, Septimus Warren Smith, an ex-soldier whose world is disintegrating into chaos. Although Clarissa and Septimus never meet, it is through the interweaving of each one’s story into a gossamer whole that Woolf works her genius.
The book is set on a June day in 1923, as Clarissa prepares for a party that evening. Unfolding events trigger memories and recollections of her past, and Woolf offers these bits and pieces to the reader who must then construct the psychological and emotional makeup of Clarissa Dalloway in his own mind. We also learn much about Clarissa through the thoughts of other characters, such as her one-time lover, Peter Walsh, her friend, Sally Seton, her husband, Richard and her daughter Elizabeth.
It is Septimus Warren Smith, however, driven to the brink of insanity by the war, an insanity that even his wife’s tender ministrations cannot cure, who acts as Clarissa’s societal antithesis and serves to divide her world into the "then" and the "now."
In this extremely complex and character-driven novel, Woolf offers her readers a challenge. The novel is not separated into chapters; almost all of the action occurs in the thoughts and reminiscences of the characters and the reader must piece together the story from the random bits and pieces of information each character provides.

See Me Paperback – October 13, 2015

Done.
PaperbackPublisher: Sphere (October 13, 2015)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0751549991ISBN-13: 978-0751549997 Product Dimensions: 6.2 x 1.5 x 9.2 inches Shipping Weight: 1.5 pounds Best Sellers Rank: #3,168 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)
Honestly, the book is exactly what you think it’s going to be, and, it’s still good. It’s actually, really good, with a high readability and passes the time quickly.

I will be upfront; I’ve never seen a Nicholas Sparks movie, nor read a Nicholas Sparks book before; I’ve been doing my best to read a variety of books this year and changed genres. This was a pleasant read, quick, and moved fairly fast. I’m not much of a romance type of person, but even as someone who’s not into guys, the main protagonist Colin, was kind of dreamy. No, really, he actually was really dreamy. As a bad boy, MMA fighter, turned good, I thought that the character was a bit over played out in the initial chapters, but as it progressed, I found that he maintained likability and still kept my attention.

A piece of me wanted to dislike the whole story; knowing that it was hitting on many of the romantic elements that I had stereotyped all of Nicholas Sparks books to be, but…it was good. Really good. Even the stereotypical family friend, with a fiancĂ©, who embraces the bad boy, who said bad boy has a soft spot for, and vows that now harm will come to them, even they were perfectly written, well developed, and offered humor to the story in very genuine and sweet ways. I laughed out loud at them…I don’t do that, but they were so cute and added a dimension to the character of Colin.

The female protagonist is well developed with some levels of depth that creates a significant amount of buy-in from the reader. I found myself rooting for her, and was happy with all of her resolutions that occurred in ways that support her character and kept rather true to who she was throughout the book. Maria has some fleeting encounters with sexual harassment, which comes up right away in the story.
In ‘See Me’ we meet Colin Hancock, a twenty eight year old who had a very aggressive an troubled youth. Now he is given a second chance in life, and he is doing his best to change his ways. Colin has started college, works hard for his money and works out more than three times a day. And above all he is getting his anger issues under control.
Maria is working hard in a respectable lawyers office. She studied hard all her life, visits her parents regularly and she is very close with her younger sister. To the outside world, Maria lives the perfect life.
Colin and Maria couldn’t be more different, but when life throws them together there is an instant attraction they can’t deny.

The thing with Nicholas Sparks his writing is that when you start one of his books you just need to keep reading until the book is finished. ‘See Me’ is no exception. From the very beginning, I was hooked to every page of this book. The setting is beautiful and the characters are very memorable. But what I loved most about ‘See Me’, is the way I really started to care for the characters and felt like I knew them. Although Colin doesn’t sound like a nice character when you first learn about his background, I really came to love him and especially the way he talks with people. Colin is honest against everyone and no matter what. Very impressive.
Maria is a character I could really relate to.. She’s ambitious, works hard and she can worry about everything. And when she meets Colin, she really doesn’t know what to think of him. She doubts herself and above all she doubts the way she feels. I really enjoyed reading about Maria and especially the way she interacted with her family.

The romance in this book is really sweet and touching and I really loved every minute of it.
