Silver Linings: A Rose Harbor Novel by Debbie Macomber is the fourth book in the series. Jo Marie Rose loves her new home and running The Inn at Rose Harbor in Cedar Cover, Washington. She has also enjoyed getting to know Mark Taylor. Mark has been working as her handyman. He recently confessed that he is love with Jo Marie and that he is leaving. Mark feels he is not worthy of Jo Marie. He has put his house up for sale and has barely talked to her the last three weeks as he has finished the gazebo (for Rose Harbor). Mark finishes the gazebo and leaves.

Jo Marie throws herself into her work about welcomes two new guests to the inn. Katie Gilroy and Coco Crenshaw have arrived for their ten year class reunion. Katie is hoping to reconnect with her first love, James. Coco wants to get even with Ryan Temple. Ryan humiliated Coco during their senior year of high school after the homecoming dance. Will Rose Harbor help Katie and Coco as it has past guests?

Jo Marie is trying to move on now that Mark has left. Bob Beldon has come by and told her Mark’s true reason for leaving (not that it helped her). Jo Marie has joined the Survivor Outreach Services (a support group) and reconnected with her old friend, Gina. Gina has decided to set up Jo Marie on a date with her fiancĂ©’s older brother, Rich. Jo Marie has not been on a date since the death of her husband. You just know the date is not going to go well. Jo Marie needs to decide how she really feels about Mark before she can decide what to do with her love life.

I was delighted to read Silver Linings. It was a heartwarming novel. I do not read this type of book often (not anymore), but I love Debbie Macomber’s novels (and this was no exception).
A special thank you to Random House/Ballantine and LibraryThing Early Reviewers for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Award-Winning author, Debbie Macomber returns with her much awaited charming Cedar Cove Rose Harbor Inn series, with the fourth installment, SILVER LININGS—a heartwarming story of second chances in this idyllic town of special unforgettable characters.

Having read all the previous books in the Rose Harbor Series,a delight to catch up with familiar characters. Recommend reading all!

When First They Met (Rose Harbor #0.5)
The Inn at Rose Harbor (Rose Harbor #1)
Lost and Found in Cedar Cove (Rose Harbor, #1.5)
Rose Harbor in Bloom (Rose Harbor, #2)
Love Letters (Rose Harbor #3)

Jo Marie is settling in with her bed and breakfast inn business, she purchased after her husband, Paul was killed in action, serving his country. We met mysterious handyman Mark Taylor who seems to intrigue Jo, and also a comfort to her, at the same time. They have become good friends, even though he is not forthcoming about his past, very rough around the edges.

Now, he has shared his feelings for her and she is starting to care, when he abruptly decides he is selling his house and leaving town with no reason. Mark does not think he is good enough for Jo Marie and she deserves better. Jo Marie is shocked by his behavior. Her mom tells her she needs to move on and get back out there and live again and forget him.

In the meantime, two guests, who are friends, visit Rose Harbor Inn for their upcoming high school reunion. Both women are living in the past regarding past loves and hurts. Things are not as simple as they had anticipated.
I found Debbie Macomber as an author with the first of the Rose Harbor novels (“The Inn at Rose Harbor”). What grabbed me from the first was her ability to eloquently describe the feelings of grief and loss that the main character, Jo Marie Rose, deals with when she discovers her husband is missing in action and presumed lost. Throughout the series, and especially in this book “Silver Linings”, Ms. Macomber continues to astound me with her ability to express feelings – both good and not good in a way that I can relate to. Once again, I spent a good portion of this book laughing and crying. I honestly don’t know what more you can ask from a novel about life.

In “Silver Linings”, we continue to follow Jo Marie’s evolving relationship with her handyman, Mark Taylor. At the end of the last book, Mark has expressed his feelings for Jo Marie, who is reeling from his declaration and spends most of this book trying to decipher what she feels for him.

Along with the Jo Marie storyline, we meet Katie and Coco. They are two friends who are in town for their ten year high school reunion. While they met in their last year of school, they bonded immediately and then each suffered an emotional setback that has haunted them for the last decade. They are attending the reunion, each with the intent of trying to resolve their set-back so they can get on with life. Their stories are told in flash-backs to their teenage years. It was an interesting way of incorporating elements of YA into a women’s literature novel. I don’t read a lot of YA but found that it worked well in this case for a one time story line. I am sure that Ms. Macomber does not intend to move this series into YA as the Jo Marie/Mark story is that of an adult couple.
