I was delighted to read Silver Linings. It was a heartwarming novel. I do not read this type of book often (not anymore), but I love Debbie Macomber’s novels (and this was no exception).
A special thank you to Random House/Ballantine and LibraryThing Early Reviewers for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Award-Winning author, Debbie Macomber returns with her much awaited charming Cedar Cove Rose Harbor Inn series, with the fourth installment, SILVER LININGS—a heartwarming story of second chances in this idyllic town of special unforgettable characters.

Having read all the previous books in the Rose Harbor Series,a delight to catch up with familiar characters. Recommend reading all!

When First They Met (Rose Harbor #0.5)
The Inn at Rose Harbor (Rose Harbor #1)
Lost and Found in Cedar Cove (Rose Harbor, #1.5)
Rose Harbor in Bloom (Rose Harbor, #2)
Love Letters (Rose Harbor #3)

Jo Marie is settling in with her bed and breakfast inn business, she purchased after her husband, Paul was killed in action, serving his country. We met mysterious handyman Mark Taylor who seems to intrigue Jo, and also a comfort to her, at the same time. They have become good friends, even though he is not forthcoming about his past, very rough around the edges.

Now, he has shared his feelings for her and she is starting to care, when he abruptly decides he is selling his house and leaving town with no reason. Mark does not think he is good enough for Jo Marie and she deserves better. Jo Marie is shocked by his behavior. Her mom tells her she needs to move on and get back out there and live again and forget him.

In the meantime, two guests, who are friends, visit Rose Harbor Inn for their upcoming high school reunion. Both women are living in the past regarding past loves and hurts. Things are not as simple as they had anticipated.
I found Debbie Macomber as an author with the first of the Rose Harbor novels (“The Inn at Rose Harbor”). What grabbed me from the first was her ability to eloquently describe the feelings of grief and loss that the main character, Jo Marie Rose, deals with when she discovers her husband is missing in action and presumed lost. Throughout the series, and especially in this book “Silver Linings”, Ms. Macomber continues to astound me with her ability to express feelings – both good and not good in a way that I can relate to. Once again, I spent a good portion of this book laughing and crying. I honestly don’t know what more you can ask from a novel about life.

In “Silver Linings”, we continue to follow Jo Marie’s evolving relationship with her handyman, Mark Taylor. At the end of the last book, Mark has expressed his feelings for Jo Marie, who is reeling from his declaration and spends most of this book trying to decipher what she feels for him.

Along with the Jo Marie storyline, we meet Katie and Coco. They are two friends who are in town for their ten year high school reunion. While they met in their last year of school, they bonded immediately and then each suffered an emotional setback that has haunted them for the last decade. They are attending the reunion, each with the intent of trying to resolve their set-back so they can get on with life. Their stories are told in flash-backs to their teenage years. It was an interesting way of incorporating elements of YA into a women’s literature novel. I don’t read a lot of YA but found that it worked well in this case for a one time story line. I am sure that Ms. Macomber does not intend to move this series into YA as the Jo Marie/Mark story is that of an adult couple.

A Preparation Guide for the Assessment Center Method 2nd Edition
Author: Visit ‘s Tina Lewis Rowe Page ID: 0398087512

From the Author

This Second Edition has the usual edits to improve the first one–and additional chapters, such as information on video-based assessment centers. I think the improvements and additions make it a good choice for those who have the first edition. I know I like it better!

I always say that the best approach is not to just learn a few techniques for getting through an assessment center, it’s to learn to do your job in the most effective ways possible–then apply what you’ve learned to your assessment center. That is why it is never too soon to begin preparing. It is also never too late to be better prepared than you would have otherwise.
I understand how hard many candidates work to do well. I understand the frustration, irritation and sometimes depression that is involved. I want to help reduce all of those negative feelings and give you a structure to help you use the exercises in your assessment center to show your knowledge and skills.
Please contact me if I can be a resource for this or anything else. Tina Lewis Rowe, Denver CO

About the Author

Tina Rowe served for 25 year on the Denver Police Department and retired as a Captain in Patrol. The next day she was sworn in as the presidential appointed United States Marshal for Colorado and served for 8 years. She was responsible for the security of the Oklahoma City bombing trials, held in Denver (US vs McVeigh and US vs Nichols). She was also the U.S. Marshal in Colorado during the events of 9/11/01.

Tina trains, presents and consults on topics related to supervision, management, leadership, professional development and organizational improvement. Her speaking style is both humorous and inspirational–and always with immediately applicable information.

Paperback: 330 pagesPublisher: Charles C Thomas Pub Ltd; 2 edition (September 11, 2013)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0398087512ISBN-13: 978-0398087517 Product Dimensions: 0.8 x 7.5 x 10 inches Shipping Weight: 1.4 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #89,135 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #47 in Books > Textbooks > Law > Criminal Law #57 in Books > Law > Criminal Law > Criminal Procedure #110 in Books > Textbooks > Business & Finance > Human Resources

I had four weeks to prepare for my assessment test and I believe this book is an asset in my preparation. I also believe buying several books is necessary in your preparation for an assessment test.

Rowe’s certainly a subject matter expert and proves her knowledge by going deep into the assessment process. I did wish Rowe could have given a few more sample answers to aid in the direction a student should take, but I understand her reasoning: develop your own.

In the end, this book is easy to read and gets to the point: your promotion.

I posted this review for the 1st edition of this book but I wanted to include it here for anyone buying the newer 2nd edition published in September 2013:

I bought this book (1st edition) for my wife while she was going through her police application process and can say without a doubt that it helped her pass her Assessment Center. The book is full of helpful information for anyone preparing for this stage of their application.

I also had the opportunity to correspond with the author (Tina Lewis Rowe) and I have to say, she is a fantastic lady who will go out of her way to help police applicants. She offered some great advice and even sent us some supplemental information by email (including material from her 2nd edition book which hadn’t yet been printed when I purchased the 1st edition). It was almost like getting a private tutoring session to go along with the book – Tina didn’t have to do any of that but she took the time to write multiple emails (many quite detailed) in an effort to further help my wife with the Assessment Center process.

This book is a fantastic resource for any police applicant going through the Assessment Center, written by an author who stands behind her work and will go above and beyond to help people she doesn’t even know. I definitely recommend it.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. I am preparing for an upcoming assessment and since it is to be my first experience being assessed I felt like I needed some help. Initially I was concerned about spending $42 on a fairly lengthy book. I wasn’t sure if it would help and I didn’t know if I would have the time to read it all. However, what I found in Ms. Rowe’s book was a very well written, easy to read and well organized manual. What you will not find are a lot of specific questions that one may be asked with their corresponding answers (Ms. Rowe explains very well why she does not include this type of help); regardless, I absolutely feel MUCH more prepared for my assessment. In addition, I plan on using this book throughout my career because not only does it have excellent assessment preparation suggestions, but it can easily serve as a "how to be an effective supervisor" book. Even the format of the book, i.e., spiral bound (to lay flat), large margins (for taking notes) and blank note taking space at the end of each chapter, was well thought out. I highly recommend this book.

Reading in the Brain

Reading in the Brain: The Science and Evolution of a Human Invention Hardcover – Bargain Price, November 12, 2009
Author: Visit ‘s Stanislas Dehaene Page ID: B003H4RAOU

From Publishers Weekly

The transparent and automatic feat of reading comprehension disguises an intricate biological effort, ably analyzed in this fascinating study. Drawing on scads of brain-imaging studies, case histories of stroke victims and ingenious cognitive psychology experiments, cognitive neuroscientist Dehaene (The Number Sense) diagrams the neural machinery that translates marks on paper into language, sound and meaning. It’s a complex and surprising circuitry, both specific, in that it is housed in parts of the cortex that perform specific processing tasks, and puzzlingly abstract. (The brain, Dehaene hypothesizes, registers words mainly as collections of pairs of letters.) The author proposes reading as an example of neuronal recycling—the recruitment of previously evolved neural circuits to accomplish cultural innovations—and uses this idea to explore how ancient scribes shaped writing systems around the brain’s potential and limitations. (He likewise attacks modern whole language reading pedagogy as an unnatural imposition on a brain attuned to learning by phonics.) This lively, lucid treatise proves once again that Dehaene is one of our most gifted expositors of science; he makes the workings of the mind less mysterious, but no less miraculous. Illus. (Nov. 16)

About the Author

French scientist Stanislas Dehaene is a world authority on the cognitive neuroscience of language and number processing in the human brain. He is the director of the Cognitive Neuroimaging Unit in Saclay, France, a professor of experimental cognitive psychology at the Collège de France, a member of the French Academy of Sciences and of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. He is the author of several books, including The Number Sense. In 2008 he was profiled in The New Yorker for his work in numerical cognition.

Hardcover: 400 pagesPublisher: Viking Adult; 1 edition (November 12, 2009)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0670021105ID: B003H4RAOU Product Dimensions: 6.4 x 1.4 x 9.3 inches Shipping Weight: 15.2 ounces Best Sellers Rank: #568,017 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #370 in Books > Science & Math > Science for Kids #893 in Books > Reference > Words, Language & Grammar > Reading Skills #912 in Books > Medical Books > Psychology > Neuropsychology
One of the last chapters opens with an epigraph from Umberto Eco "If God existed, he would be a library."

Which tickled my fancy, but doesn’t necessarily portray Dehaene’s stance about how inborn structural properties of our brain are co-opted and retrained (neuronal recycling)in order for humans to develop the ability to recognize words and understand them (no matter if Chinese or French.)

"Recycling, on the other hand, implies that before cortical regions convert to other uses, they already possess prior structural properties inherited from evolution. Each cortical region starts out with a portfolio of assets and liabilities that are only partially rearranged by learning."

Dehaene uses most of his book to describe in detail the work of various researchers in figuring out where certain processes in the brain reside. His development of a theory of the "letterbox", or a parallel series of processes/areas that get activated in order to recognize letters is fascinating stuff. However, for a laywoman like me (I’m from a language acquisition education background, but by no means a scientist)it was heavy duty reading.

I slogged through it nonetheless, and emerged with an interesting view on how evolution might have prepared our brain in two important ways: by helping us be expert recognizers of primary geometric shapes and b) giving us the ability to recognize mirror images of objects even if we’ve only seen a profile.

Again, it was heavy technical speak about different sections of the brain, but ultimately manageable.

This book contains an incredible amount of info. You can read it cover to cover or chapters at a time and its always going to please. The ONLY real complaint I would have is that its too heavy! Lol but worth it. This and the companion book by Dale, The Subtle Body, are an essential book combo for any energyworker. A++

It is a great guide for a practitioner in the holistic field. It is sort of a repetition of her book of Anatomy.

This is a textbook sized powerhouse of information in the subtle energy body and practices. I have read a lot on it, but this is the best book I have read on the subject. A bookshelf find!

MPRE Practice Questions Kindle Edition

File Size: 579 KBPrint Length: 156 pagesPublisher: AmeriBar Publishing (September 11, 2012)Publication Date: September 11, 2012 Sold by:  Digital Services, Inc. Language: EnglishID: B0099W9V1EText-to-Speech: Enabled X-Ray: Not Enabled Word Wise: Not EnabledLending: Enabled Enhanced Typesetting: Enabled Best Sellers Rank: #165,993 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store) #11 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Law > Ethics & Professional Responsibility #39 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Law > Legal Education #61 in Books > Law > Ethics & Professional Responsibility

This book is mediocre. Not terrible, but certainly not great.

There are typos *everywhere*. I draw your attention to the answer for Question #54, which starts right in the middle of the explanation of the answer. You have to use process of elimination to figure out that the answer is B because apparently, the first few sentences are missing.

A second example of a really odd typo is found in Question # 112, answer C: "Yes, because both the mortgagor not the mortgagee provided informed consent to the attorney’s representation." It’s supposed to say "yes, because both the mortgagor AND the mortgagee." The difference between an "and" and a "not" on an MPRE can make the difference between correct and incorrect.

(Also Answer to Question # 53 isn’t in bold and 54 is randomly missing the pound sign? These aren’t substantive typos but they make me seriously question the quality of work that went into this book. Not to mention the apparently random differences in the amount of return spaces between the answers to the questions.)

I also staunchly disagree with the answer to question #104. This is a classic example where the lawyer effectively wins the subject of the action as his fee, which gives him a proprietary interest in the action as explicitly prohibited by MR 1.8. The answer should be C.

In short, this book will get you there, maybe. I hope. I take the MPRE tomorrow, and wonder whether this book has screwed me over. I want my money back for poor quality of editing.

My biggest problem with this book is that it contains several spelling/grammatical mistakes. The questions and explanations are worthwhile; it is really just a problem with a few questions that prevent me from giving this work a better review.

Not as hard of questions as are actually on the MPRE but still good practice so worth it in my opinion
