The Jungle (Barnes & Noble Classics Series) (B&N Classics) Mass Market Paperback – April 1, 2003
Author: Visit ‘s Upton Sinclair Page ID: 1593080085

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Originally published in 1991 as part of a short-lived revival of the Classics Illustrated line, this adaptation of Sinclair’s muckraking socialist novel succeeds because of its powerful images. When Kuper initially drew it, he was already a well-known left-wing comics artist. His unenviable task is condensing a 400-page novel into a mere 48 pages, and, inevitably, much of the narrative drama is lost. Kuper replaces it, however, with unmatched pictorial drama. The story follows Lithuanian immigrant Jurgis Rudkis and his family as they are eaten up and spit out by capitalism (represented by Chicago’s packing houses). Kuper uses an innovative full-color stencil technique with the immediacy of graffiti to give Sinclair’s story new life. When Jurgis is jailed for beating the rich rapist Connor, a series of panels suffused with a dull, red glow draw readers closer and closer to Jurgis’s face, until they see that the glint in his eye is fire. Jurgis, briefly prosperous as a strong-arm man for the Democratic machine, smokes a cigar; the smoke forms an image of his dead son and evicted family. Perhaps most visually dazzling is the cubist riot as strikers battle police amid escaping cattle. Kuper infuses this 1906 novel with the energy of 1980s-era street art and with his own profoundly original graphic innovation, making it a classic in its own right.

From School Library Journal

Grade 10 Up–In 1906, Sinclair published The Jungle, a realistic and scathing portrayal of the life of an immigrant worker. Kuper’s revised adaptation focuses solely on its hero, Jurgis Rudkus. Readers follow him from his emigration from Lithuania to downtown Chicago, eager to find the American Dream he’s heard so much about. But the harsh world of Chi-town quickly shatters his hopes; forced to take a job at a slaughterhouse, he performs the most menial and vile tasks. An injury pushes him to unemployment and, unable to provide for them, he leaves his family in shame. Rudkus transforms from a starry-eyed dreamer into a cynical but valiant man who fights for workers’ rights. Kuper’s artwork effectively mimics some of the major art movements of the day. The book opens in a Chagall-inflected form of cubism, lending a folksy, dreamy, and hopeful quality to the early pages. Then, the visuals become increIDgly jagged and frenetic until they reach the Futurist-inspired panels that illustrate the story’s climax. Well-plotted and beautifully illustrated, Kuper’s adaptation breathes new life into this classic American story.–Matthew L. Moffett, Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Upton Sinclair’s "The Jungle" is one of the handful of books throughout all of history, perhaps, that have encapsulated the crying voices of the oppressed. While many readers and politicians at the time of its publication (and since) have focused on the intolerable conditions in which American food products were produced, the major thrust in "The Jungle" is not in regards to the ill-treatment of our food; it is in regards to the ill-treatment of our workers.

The repeated sufferings of Jurgis and his family are akin to an overwhelming symphony of sorrowful songs. As his family is driven deeper into debt, his body worn down, and his life’s zeal and love slowly strangled, Jurgis’ desperation becomes palpable, and if you can’t sympathize with his feelings at the loss of his family’s home–a structure they worked so hard for–check your pulse. You might be dead.

The book contains some of the most horrific depictions in all of literature, including a mercifully oblique reference to a child’s death by being eaten alive by rats. Although the novel focuses on Jurgis primarily, it is the children–the laboring little people–who elicit the most sympathy in this reader’s view. Struggling to support their family, escaping extremely dangerous situations (one little girl is nearly dragged into an alley and raped), sleeping on the street, and begging desperately for food–the appalling conditions being visited upon children as described in "The Jungle" still have the power to arouse strong anger and outrage, over a century after its initial publication.

For a course I’m taking I was required to read "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doer. But let’s be honest. I procrastinated to a point that there was NO way I could finish the book by the time my class was going to start and I desperately needed an alternative. I began searching for overviews and reviews online- and then I found this book. It looked to be a pretty thorough review and I was sure it was what I needed.

The book was SO thorough! It’s exactly what I needed and I cannot even begin to explain to you how happy I was I found this review. The book takes you through the important moments in each chapter- which was exactly what I needed for my class. By the end of this book I felt as though I had a thorough grasp on everything that had happened in ‘All the Light We Cannot See’, including major (and many minor) events throughout the story.

The book allows you to break-down each of the characters and truly understand what role they played in the story. The book captured all of the information I needed to sound well-informed on the book during my class, and I knew exactly what everyone was talking about while discussing the story (even though, unfortunately, I hadn’t read it myself).

I could see this book being a huge with many book clubs, and I’ve used similar Summary and Analysis style books in the past with my book clubs. This one was very well written and had a lot of thought provoking pieces that I think people who actually did read ‘All the Light We Cannot See’ would enjoy discussing and debating. If you’re looking for a book that can help you delve even deeper into the story, I’m sure this book would be ideal for that as well.

Die Again (Rizzoli & Isles) Audio CD – Abridged, Audiobook, CD
Author: Visit ‘s Tess Gerritsen Page ID: 1480502472

Review

Advance praise for Die Again

“With Die Again, Tess Gerritsen proves that she is still at the top of her game. I love this fantastically gripping story and can’t wait for more.”—Karin Slaughter

“Tess Gerritsen always delivers, and this is Gerritsen at her dark, addictive best. What gives Die Again its peculiar charge is the idea, never far from the surface, that we humans are predatory animals like any other. Perhaps we should not be so surprised to find hunters among us.”—William Landay

“Animal instinct turns savage—and man is an animal. A Rizzoli and Isles thriller is a guaranteed great read, but this time out Gerritsen really brings on the scary!”—Sandra Brown

“Tess Gerritsen once again proves her masterful dominance in stories delving into the criminal mind and forensic sciences. Die Again left me breathless as Rizzoli and Isles investigate a horrific murder, one with ties to an unsolved massacre in years past. Here is a story both harrowing and as intellectually sharp as a dagger’s edge. I dare you to try to stop reading this once you’ve started.”—James Rollins

“Harrowing! Seamlessly melding the gritty streets of Boston with the golden plains of Africa, Tess Gerritsen sets up a cunning predator who’s spent years perfecting his game. Now enter Rizzoli and Isles, two of Boston’s best determined to catch one of the world’s worst in a battle of wits where only the strong can survive. This is Tess Gerritsen at her finest!”—Lisa Gardner

Well, actually, Detective Jane Rizzoli goes out of Boston and into Africa to help solve the Boston homicide of avid hunter, Leon Gott in book 11 of this popular series. It appears Gott’s son disappeared in Botswanna several years ago, and the quest to find a link between the tragedies of both father and son takes the 2 women on an adventure to sub-Saharan Africa. Tess Gerritsen does an amazing job of describing the deep and dark African jungle, notably, as a formidable habitat for some of its most dangerous predators (both human and feline). I love to learn, and when an author of my favorite fiction genre is able to both educate and entertain, that it is a win-win.

With most of the previous Rizzoli and Isles novels taking place in Boston, it was great to experience a new and exotic location throughout a good portion of the story. As always, the dialog, interaction, and friendship between the two main characters with polar personalities is pure genius and a lot of fun. And while crime-fighting, dynamic duos are certainly not a new concept in fiction ("Dr. Watson, I presume…"), fortunately, it is one that still works, and Ms. Gerritsen works it well.

Just like all of the books in the Rizolli and Isles series (which has made it to the small screen as a TV series on the TNT cable channel), I definitely had a hard time putting this one down! And no skipped pages, either. I tend to be an impatient reader and do not appreciate when an author spends too much time on unimportant details, such as over self-analysis by characters, including their feelings, philosophy, and minute relationship details with other characters (aka Patricia Cornwell). Tess Gerritsen keeps the story and plot moving at a great pace, and there is no room for boredom.

Mrs. Dalloway (The Classic Collection) MP3 CD – Audiobook, MP3 Audio, Unabridged
Author: Visit ‘s Virginia Woolf Page ID: 1480560138

.com Review

As Clarissa Dalloway walks through London on a fine June morning, a sky-writing plane captures her attention. Crowds stare upwards to decipher the message while the plane turns and loops, leaving off one letter, picking up another. Like the airplane’s swooping path, Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway follows Clarissa and those whose lives brush hers–from Peter Walsh, whom she spurned years ago, to her daughter Elizabeth, the girl’s angry teacher, Doris Kilman, and war-shocked Septimus Warren Smith, who is sinking into madness.

As Mrs. Dalloway prepares for the party she is giving that evening, a series of events intrudes on her composure. Her husband is invited, without her, to lunch with Lady Bruton (who, Clarissa notes anxiously, gives the most amusing luncheons). Meanwhile, Peter Walsh appears, recently from India, to criticize and confide in her. His sudden arrival evokes memories of a distant past, the choices she made then, and her wistful friendship with Sally Seton.

Woolf then explores the relationships between women and men, and between women, as Clarissa muses, “It was something central which permeated; something warm which broke up surfaces and rippled the cold contact of man and woman, or of women together…. Her relation in the old days with Sally Seton. Had not that, after all, been love?” While Clarissa is transported to past afternoons with Sally, and as she sits mending her green dress, Warren Smith catapults desperately into his delusions. Although his troubles form a tangent to Clarissa’s web, they undeniably touch it, and the strands connecting all these characters draw tighter as evening deepens. As she immerses us in each inner life, Virginia Woolf offers exquisite, painful images of the past bleeding into the present, of desire overwhelmed by society’s demands. –Joannie Kervran Stangeland –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

“With its annotated contemporary reviews, newspaper articles, and historical and medical documents, Broadview’s Mrs Dalloway is an ideal student text.” (Maggie Humm, University of East London, editor of The Edinburgh Companion to Virginia Woolf and the Arts)

“Jo-Ann Wallace’s superb edition of Mrs. Dalloway offers students, scholars, and common readers a richly contextualized framework for Woolf’s fourth novel. Brief, clear, and unobtrusive annotations cover geographical, historical, economic, social, and literary allusions. A thorough yet readable introduction covers Woolf’s biography and reputation, her novel’s modernist and experimental features, and its status as a war novel. Excellent appendices capture a wide range of contemporary reactions, locate the novel within Woolf’s fictional and nonfictional canon, and give readers entry into the lived experience of the time through political, medical, educational, and social documents. The select bibliography and brief chronology are also helpful.” (Beth Rigel Daughterty, Otterbein University)

Although the time covered in this complex novel is only one day, Virginia Woolf, through her genius, manages to cover a lifetime unraveling and exposing the mysteries of the human personality.
The central character of the novel is the delicate Clarissa Dalloway, a disciplined English gentlewoman who provides the perfect contrast to another of the book’s characters, Septimus Warren Smith, an ex-soldier whose world is disintegrating into chaos. Although Clarissa and Septimus never meet, it is through the interweaving of each one’s story into a gossamer whole that Woolf works her genius.
The book is set on a June day in 1923, as Clarissa prepares for a party that evening. Unfolding events trigger memories and recollections of her past, and Woolf offers these bits and pieces to the reader who must then construct the psychological and emotional makeup of Clarissa Dalloway in his own mind. We also learn much about Clarissa through the thoughts of other characters, such as her one-time lover, Peter Walsh, her friend, Sally Seton, her husband, Richard and her daughter Elizabeth.
It is Septimus Warren Smith, however, driven to the brink of insanity by the war, an insanity that even his wife’s tender ministrations cannot cure, who acts as Clarissa’s societal antithesis and serves to divide her world into the "then" and the "now."
In this extremely complex and character-driven novel, Woolf offers her readers a challenge. The novel is not separated into chapters; almost all of the action occurs in the thoughts and reminiscences of the characters and the reader must piece together the story from the random bits and pieces of information each character provides.

Honestly, the book is exactly what you think it’s going to be, and, it’s still good. It’s actually, really good, with a high readability and passes the time quickly.

I will be upfront; I’ve never seen a Nicholas Sparks movie, nor read a Nicholas Sparks book before; I’ve been doing my best to read a variety of books this year and changed genres. This was a pleasant read, quick, and moved fairly fast. I’m not much of a romance type of person, but even as someone who’s not into guys, the main protagonist Colin, was kind of dreamy. No, really, he actually was really dreamy. As a bad boy, MMA fighter, turned good, I thought that the character was a bit over played out in the initial chapters, but as it progressed, I found that he maintained likability and still kept my attention.

A piece of me wanted to dislike the whole story; knowing that it was hitting on many of the romantic elements that I had stereotyped all of Nicholas Sparks books to be, but…it was good. Really good. Even the stereotypical family friend, with a fiancé, who embraces the bad boy, who said bad boy has a soft spot for, and vows that now harm will come to them, even they were perfectly written, well developed, and offered humor to the story in very genuine and sweet ways. I laughed out loud at them…I don’t do that, but they were so cute and added a dimension to the character of Colin.

The female protagonist is well developed with some levels of depth that creates a significant amount of buy-in from the reader. I found myself rooting for her, and was happy with all of her resolutions that occurred in ways that support her character and kept rather true to who she was throughout the book. Maria has some fleeting encounters with sexual harassment, which comes up right away in the story.
In ‘See Me’ we meet Colin Hancock, a twenty eight year old who had a very aggressive an troubled youth. Now he is given a second chance in life, and he is doing his best to change his ways. Colin has started college, works hard for his money and works out more than three times a day. And above all he is getting his anger issues under control.
Maria is working hard in a respectable lawyers office. She studied hard all her life, visits her parents regularly and she is very close with her younger sister. To the outside world, Maria lives the perfect life.
Colin and Maria couldn’t be more different, but when life throws them together there is an instant attraction they can’t deny.

The thing with Nicholas Sparks his writing is that when you start one of his books you just need to keep reading until the book is finished. ‘See Me’ is no exception. From the very beginning, I was hooked to every page of this book. The setting is beautiful and the characters are very memorable. But what I loved most about ‘See Me’, is the way I really started to care for the characters and felt like I knew them. Although Colin doesn’t sound like a nice character when you first learn about his background, I really came to love him and especially the way he talks with people. Colin is honest against everyone and no matter what. Very impressive.
Maria is a character I could really relate to.. She’s ambitious, works hard and she can worry about everything. And when she meets Colin, she really doesn’t know what to think of him. She doubts herself and above all she doubts the way she feels. I really enjoyed reading about Maria and especially the way she interacted with her family.

The romance in this book is really sweet and touching and I really loved every minute of it.

Review

“The authors of this book cover an important area of statistical application infrequently discussed in biostatistics texts, namely methods appropriate to situations where the experimental units are groups of people instead of individuals. The stated purpose is to bring to the biostatistical community an understanding of cluster randomization methods. … The authors have done a very good job of explaining why traditional methods are inappropriate and they provide discussion of several alternative analyses that can be used to generate more appropriate results at both the cluster and individual levels. … [T]he coverage is understandable to those without a great deal of rigorous background in statistics and so it is fair to say that the book is not written for experts. … This particular book fills an important void in the biostatistics area specifically because it is written in way that is understandable to a group of people who need to learn about the issues discussed.”–Doody’s

A cluster randomization trial is one in which intact social units, or clusters of individuals, are randomized to different intervention groups. Trials randomizing clusters have become particularly widespread in the evaluation of non-therapeutic interventions, including lifestyle modification, educational programmes and innovations in the provision of health care. The increIDg popularity of this design among health researchers over the past two decades has led to an extensive body of methodology on the subject. This is the first book to present a systematic and united treatment of this topic; it contains distinctive chapters on the history of cluster randomized trials, ethical issues and reporting guidelines.

I am an epidemiologist responsible for designing and overseeing implementation, analysis and reporting of a number of cluster randomized health intervention trials in developing countries. I found this book absolutely terrific for several reasons. First, the scope of the book is broad. This is not just a compilation of statistical methods. The authors discuss the rationale for cluster randomization, its historic development, specific issues that arise in planning the studies, securing informed consent and other ethical issues affected by cluster design. The final chapter reviews the central themes of the book in discussing how to fully report a cluster randomized trial. Throughout these chapters the authors describe both the theoretical issues raised, as well as practical solutions. Second, the book represents a succinct and collected discussion of the relevant issues. As a non-statistician, I don’t read the primary statistical literature. I do read health intervention studies that employ a cluster randomized method. I may attend an occasional short seminar on cluster design, or discuss particular issues with collaborating statisticians, but until I read this book, I felt I was freelancing each design and analysis issue. After reading the book I have exposure to the whole paradigm. I can understand the design and analysis choices, make better decisions, and make consultations with my collaborating statisticians more focused and productive. Third, options for analysis, including their assumptions, advantages and disadvantages, as well as methods for calculating sample size are systematically presented. This directly empowers the reader to make balanced and sound decisions about appropriate study size and analytic approach. Fourth, the book is readable.

Although a very useful textbook for analyzing complex communication behaviors, this book is somewhat dense. It is rich with theory and detailed analyses, but it will not teach you how to relate better to your patients. Great book for a course, not so great if you are using it on your own.

Its got a lot of great information related to Health communication. my class at UT required it but barely used it.

It is just worth it a great book for students to have in the health care field it really delivers

*** No MOBY Spoilers. I promise. But there are spoilers of other books in the Outlander series! ***

When we left these characters after `An Echo in the Bone’, way back in 2009 (and 1980, and 1778, respectively) the Fraser clan were spread far and wide and swimming in various levels of hot water.

Believing Jamie to be dead and lost at sea, along with his sister Jenny, Claire married Lord John Grey after rumblings in the British Army had her targeted for arrest on account of being a spy. Not, in fact, being dead and lost Jamie returned to find Claire at Lord John’s house in Philadelphia where he was at once confronted with the fact that his wife was married to his dear friend, and his son William (Ninth Earl of Ellesmere) was confronted with the world’s worst kept secret – that he is in fact the illegitimate son of James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser – a rebel Highlander.

Elsewhere in 1778 – young Ian, Jamie’s turned-Mohawk nephew was laying his heart at the feet of Quaker woman, Rachel Hunter, and making plans to wed her.

Meanwhile, in 1980, Claire and Jamie’s time-travelling daughter Brianna was in her own pickle. Confronted by her colleague Rob Cameron, who claimed to have kidnapped her son Jem and taken him through the Craigh na Dun stone circle (to when?) Brianna’s husband, Roger, went after his son unknowingly leaving Brianna and daughter Mandy in the clutches of Rob Cameron and unknown accomplices whose scheme for buried treasure is coming to a fore.

Jem, meanwhile, was trying to remain calm inside the deep, dark hydroelectric tunnel where Cameron had stashed him.

Are we all caught up then?
***Spoilers – please don’t read if you want to avoid me giving away some narrative points in this novel***
I love this Outlander series and enjoyed being with the characters through this telling, but I agree that it was a disappointing read for these reasons:

1) Rape as the go-to tension builder/plot point. I was starting to feel this before this novel, but WiMOHB takes it to a new level. Look, I get that there are lots of rapists in the world, but when every bad guy tries to rape every main female character in the story, it does’t just get old, it diminishes the impact of the violence and violation of rape. Jamie was violently tortured and raped. Claire was sexually assaulted in France and watched as her companion was violently raped on a street, then she was forced to barter sex with the King to save Jamie’s life after he attacked his male rapist in France. Fergus was forced to prostitute himself as a poor urchin in France. Brianna was raped, then she had some kind of weird relationship with her rapist, which I never understood, and led to her being put in danger and almost being sold into slavery (where she was again physically assaulted as a potential buyer "assessed" her person). Claire was beaten, sexually assaulted by multiple men and then raped by a complete stranger. And in this novel, Brianna is forced to strip and be touched by Rob Cameron, who intends to rape her, but she grabs him by the balls (literally) and disables him before he can finish the deed (it’s still a sexual assault…if this was supposed to be cathartic, like, look she can fight back and defend herself now, it was not).
I’m torn. There are parts of "Written in My Own Heart’s Blood" that are equal to some of the best I’ve ever read, but then there are some elements that I came to feel were self-indulgent vanities on the part of the author. About half-way through I had the sudden thought that this series needs to come to an end and soon.

All of the praise for Ms. Galbadon’s writing is well deserved as this book is all that we have come to expect from her. She is able to establish setting and character better than pretty much any author I’ve ever read with the possible exception of Stephen King. I feel like I know Jamie and Claire as well as I know members of my own family. The author’s powers of description are excellent and her ability to create tension are outstanding.

The story contains all the familiar, well-loved characters, adds several new ones and continues smoothly connected to the one that came before it in Echo in the Bone. We find out the fate of Bree, Roger, and Jem in the modern times as well as seeing Jamie and Claire through some of the early and bitter battles of the American Revolution. Lord John and William also get a fair amount of play in this novel. Truth be told, I found Lord John’s story and struggles in this novel thoroughly engrossing almost more so than that of many of the other characters. However, I must confess that William’s bellyaching and moaning about his paternity wore out its welcome well before it ended and his and Jamie’s collaboration on a problem near the end of the novel stretched my credulity a bit.

So, what then is the problem that has me so torn on how to rate this novel?

Katherine Carlyle – October 6, 2015 Free PDF

Katherine Carlyle Paperback – October 6, 2015
Author: Rupert Thomson ID: 1590517385

Review

“Thomson is a hypnotic writer. His prose is precise and controlled, his images intriguingly dreamlike. Katherine Carlyle leaves a sharp, visceral afterimage in its wake; much of its staying power lies in Thomson’s ability to send the reader’s imagination beyond its final page.” —Elle

“Rupert Thomson charges [Katherine Carlyle] with such high-powered emotional intensity that it is impossible to put down…a stunning, thought-provoking novel…We should read it and then read everything else by this very fine writer.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune

“Unsettling, hypnotic…compulsively readable…startling and refreshing in its originality…after he draws us skillfully into Katherine’s mysterious quest, [Rupert Thomson] renders us unable to look away.” —Miami Herald

“Thomson’s simply stated prose is made richer by the flaws of Kit’s character, resulting in an honest and worthy story of self-discovery.” —Booklist

“Katherine Carlyle is an oddly compelling heroine whose eccentric disappearing act becomes a journey of self-discovery. This is a novel with panache.” —Library Journal

Katherine Carlyle is mesmerizing—in all senses of the word. Rupert Thomson’s prose is gracefully crafted; it’s a transfixing, intriguing adventure…From the bustling, alluring and sometimes dangerous underbelly of Berlin to the isolated and grimy, yet somehow magical, settlement on Svalbard, he deftly draws us into vivid landscapes and adventures, again and again.” —New York Daily News

Katherine Carlyle left me stunned and amazed. Thomson’s ability to create a world that feels entirely original and untouched by any other mind is at full strength in this strange and haunting book. The story proceeds with perfect logic from mystery to mystery, and takes the reader with it, unable to stop reading or guess where it will go next. The title character is utterly convincing, and her quest expresses with great clarity and power the strangeness of her origins. It’s a masterpiece.” —Philip Pullman, best-selling author of the His Dark Materials trilogy

“Smart, stylish, inventive, and always entertaining, Rupert Thomson displays enormous range as a novelist. His prose is consistently sharp, his ideas consistently intriguing. I would read any book that Thomson wrote.” —Lionel Shriver, best-selling author of Big Brother and We Need to Talk About Kevin

“Rupert Thomson’s twilight worlds have long enchanted many readers, and this road trip through a snow dome of mesmeric hallucinations is Thomson at his best.” —Richard Flanagan, author of The Narrow Road to the Deep North, winner of the 2015 Man Booker Prize

“If the mind best comprehends the heart through metaphor, what new ways of imagining ourselves and our loves are offered by technologies earlier undreamt of? This is the question Rupert Thomson seeks to answer in this stealthy, intelligent, surreptitiously affective novel. With a narrative that moves from the sophisticated milieux of Rome and Berlin to the startling lower reaches of the Arctic Circle, delivered in prose that is spare, cinematic and masterfully controlled, Katherine Carlyle is at once seductively contemporary and suggestively fable-like: Frozen for grown-ups.” —Rebecca Mead, author of My Life in Middlemarch

“This riveting and visionary story haunted me long after I finished the last page. Katherine Carlyle is an extraordinary novel.” —Deborah Moggach, best-selling author of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

“Written with the pace and detail of a spy novel, sleek and oddly honest, this is the fascinating story of Katherine Carlyle who mysteriously decides that instead of university and a privileged life she will erase her identity and much of her emotions and go untraceably to the most remote settlement of the Russian north. She is not seeking love. She is determined to have abandoned it.” —James Salter, author of All That Is

A narrator who opens her story by telling how she was deep frozen for eight years as an IVF embryo awaiting implantation into her mother is certainly not going to give you the same old same old. And when Kit Carlyle, now nineteen, wanders around Rome feeling that odd objects found in the street are secret messages addressed to her by fate, you either conclude that so crazy a character is not for you, or stick with her and see where she takes you. Fortunately, I chose the latter, watching as she picks up a stranger in the Stazione Termini like an assignation between spies, goes with him to an hotel, then shrugs him off with equal ease. Before long, a chance conversation overheard in a movie theater causes her to take out all her money, drown her cell phone, erase her traces, and move to Berlin. And thence to Arkhangel’sk. And thence to Svalbard above the Arctic Circle.

At each stage, she bumps into people in bizarre coincidental ways. And in each case, she goes with the flow for a while and then moves on. She calls it "experimenting with coincidence." Somewhere in all of this, there is a path that she is meant to take, a final destination that will lead her to herself, revealing who she really is. We see her as liberated, bright, and resourceful, but essentially alone. Her mother died a few years earlier of cancer. Her father is a celebrated television reporter, rarely at home. Her moving into the unknown is both a punishment for him and a test to see if he cares enough to find her. The further away she gets, the more she indulges in imagining him following her trail, a scenario she fills out in such detail that it has almost more reality than her own life in these remote places.
